WHO is the Denver Poker Tour?

The Denver Poker Tour was started by Casino Masters USA which opened in November 1997 in Colorado. Casino Masters USA creates and manages casino theme parties for private businesses, charity events, and special event productions. The Denver Poker Tour was created in October 2003 after the creation of the "Poker Craze" by ESPNs' broadcasts of past World Series of Poker Events. Since inception, the Denver Poker Tour has operated and staffed over 10,000 individual poker tournaments with an average attendance of over 50 players.

The Denver Poker Tour is the largest FREE Bar Poker Tour Operator in the United States. At last check, the Denver Poker Tour is also one of the only LEGAL Bar Poker Tour(s) in Colorado. 

Legal, how so?

Well first off, you can't charge people play in the tournaments if you are giving away a prize. You can't charge a cover, you can't charge a drink minimum, you can't charge a player to play period. That's gambling, and that's illegal.  

Recently the State of Colorado ruled that "Poker Tour" providers had to treat their staff as employees, not contractors. What this meant is that "Poker Tour" companies had to provide:  Workers Compensation, Unemployment Benefits, General Liability Insurance, State Withholding Tax, Federal Withholding Tax, Social Security Matching Contribution, Colorado State Employee Head Tax, and many other requirements in order to do business in the State. Many companies don't do this and are breaking the law.

Recently the Colorado Department of Labor, State of Colorado, and the Internal Revenue Service stated that the dealers and management of "poker tour" companies were not contractors, but in fact full fledged employees. This meant that "poker tour" companies had to offer like any other LEGAL business:

General Liability Insurance, Workers Compensation, Unemployment Benefits, State Withholding Taxes, Federal Withholding Taxes, Social Security Matching Contribution, Colorado Employee Head Tax, and many more. We also had to abide by the EEOC, OSHA, FLSA, USERRA, and Fair Employment Act.

The State of Colorado and the Colorado Department of Labor has informed us that other "poker tours" in the state will have to abide the guidelines set forth by State and Federal law, or they will not be allowed to operate their business.
